March Brand Love: LegalPad ⚖️

I’m super happy to announce our partnership with LegalPad. This co-female-founded biz helps founders relocate to the US on the 01 Visa - getting startups and their teams work visas in the fastest way possible. Visas and immigration can be a huge pain in the butt, so if you’re dreaming of the US, check them out. We’ve organised free consultations with them along with $500 off if you start working with them.

Psst… 🤫

This is just a little hint to keep an eye on our socials this Thursday (March 10th) - there may be a little opportunity regarding some cute desk accessories ✨

🔑 Insights From This Week’s Episodes on the Female Startup Club Podcast

In light of the launch of Your Hype Girl, I recorded a bunch of solo episodes delving into five juicy chapters from the book! Showcasing some of our fave women building the world’s most exciting businesses in e-comm and how it’s impacted my life & the lessons I took away from it.

1. Be a unicorn 🦄

EP292: Your Hype Girl is LIVE & my takeaway from Lil Ahenkan (aka Flex Mami)... “Differentiate Yourself, Girl”.

Lil doesn’t like to compete where she doesn’t compare. When she was looking to get into the fast-growing social media influencer space in 2018, she wasn’t deterred by not fitting into the typical influencer mould. She created a space for herself. You are you and that is your strength. Not only can nobody compete with that, but no one can take that away for you. Let’s monetize on that, girl! 💸

2. Love clouds judgment ☁️

EP293: Your Hype Girl day 2 & Blueland’s Founder Sarah Paiji Yoo's (frigging amazing) advice: “Don’t fall in love with your ideas.”

This one blew my mind when Sarah told me this back in 2020, and it’s helped me enormously since then (more on that in the ep). Don’t keep in a state of inertia just because you’re already so far down the rabbit hole. Be honest with yourself, what you are building, and continually audit yourself to make sure you’re on the right, and honest, track. Don’t get swept up in the romance. ❤️‍🔥

3. Bootstrapping puts focus on profitability 🔎

EP294: Your Hype Girl day 3 + my key takeaway from Hero Cosmetics Founder Ju Rhyu: “Bootstrapping puts focus on profitability.”

Ju points out that being forced to really focus on being profitable from the beginning meant she was forced to always be really resourceful - in turn making the biz way more attractive to investors 🤑

This has been on my mind for a while. We get so caught up in media celebrating founders raising millions of dollars before even launching a product. But why not build a profitable business first? Prove the concept, raise down the road.

4. No budget? No problem 😏

EP295: Your Hype Girl Day 4, a gem with Five Minute Journal Founder Mimi Ikonn: “Keep it grassroots”.

When it came to Mimi’s first venture, Luxy Hair, she didn’t have a budget. Like, at all. Her organic marketing strategy became to send free product out to followers as gifts. It was super effective and word of mouth spread quickly. So much so, in fact, that Luxy Hair turned over more than a million dollars in their first year. 🚀

It’s so easy to think you need a lot of money to get started, but the reality is that keeping things grassroots can get you far. Think about FSC for a second… Until this book, we hadn’t paid a single penny on marketing initiatives - ever.

My advice? Put your money into product development and get creative with the countless creative marketing opportunities that won’t cost you a dime 💛

5. Failure opens doors 🚪🚶‍♀️

EP296: Get a Signed Copy of Your Hype Girl! + Tea Drops Founder Sashee Chandran's Key Takeaway: "Failed concepts can lead to bigger things".

Entrepreneurs are ordinary people that have a true passion for a specific idea and have the grit to really see it through. No one likes to fail. But simply put, obstacles are just part of this journey. The sooner you develop an attitude that accepts failure as part of this journey, and the grit to really see it through, the more you and your killer biz idea stand to benefit. Let’s get on that daily hustle.

Biz Wins & Failz 🎢

Straight from Hype Club.

We’ve got an ongoing Biz Wins & Fails chat going in HC. This is where we can learn what we can hopefully avoid in our own journeys, and what keeps us feeling like we are not in this alone. A lot of us are seeing a lot of highlights, but tbh there are also so many downs and things that go wrong.

Siobhan McDonagh (Co-Founder of Inclusip) shared her exasperation this week:

“Anyone ever feel like pulling their hair out during product development??”

This rung true for SO many of the Hype Girls. The whole process is trial and error, and it can be so frustrating. Gina, on iteration number 400, totally relates. But as Melissa reminded us: “success is going to feel so much sweeter when this is in the past and you’ve worked through it. You’ve GOT THIS!” ⭐

*The doors to Hype Club are open again, so if you’ve been looking forward to joining us - now’s the time!

What’s on this week? 👀

Let’s see what we have in store for you this week…
