ICYMI: BGG ventures shared their top 5 lessons from backing 100+ Female-Led start-ups... (and the findings are pretty great ✨)

1/ Many female founders were building in more traditional “consumer” arenas in 2014 but the script has flipped clearly in 2022, with tech-focused start-ups rising to the top 🤖

2/ While FF are still building consumer start-ups, in the last 3 years, the overall number of tech or software start-ups has quickly outweighed traditional consumer start-ups 💻

3/ Contrary to the stereotypes, female founders are driving outsized returns in technology and health-focused companies 🥂🥂🥂

4/ BBGV’s portfolio of over 100 female-founded companies across three funds mirrors the market trends of increasing B2B and B2B2C investments 💼

5/ In sum, FF are not just building in perceived “female” consumer arenas — they’re solving real-world problems that can impact millions of users at scale

🔑 Insights From This Week’s Episodes on the Female Startup Club Podcast

Directly from the women building the world’s most exciting businesses in the e-commerce and CPG space.

1. How to sell 10,000 units in your first month 🚀

EP484: Learning from Kayla Castañeda about her Latina better-for-you Aguas Frescas brand Agua Bonita and how they made their mark on the industry.

It was a wildfire thing. Kayla was generous enough to dive into the ins and outs of what it takes to orchestrate such a super successful launch. 👇

  • The people were ready for Agua Bonita: this product was just completely absent from the market, and people wanted it - simple but hugely impactful

  • Word of Mouth: they told their friends to tell their friends to go on and tell their friends (you get the gist) about their cool brand

  • Give-Aways: when you are so new, it doesn’t matter how approachable you are, free is always most approachable for anyone

  • Pretty Packaging: Agua Bonita can be deemed extremely IG-worthy, meaning it’s super sharable, meaning you’re going to see it everywhere = smart

  • Agua Bonita was ready for the people: extensive research into where they can find their consumers, and then showing up in their life throughout the day

Kayla also shared some pretty key know-how about a concept called free-fill when it comes to giveaways in retail. Heard of it? Check out the full chat for the low-down.

2. $2000 for 20% of the biz, any takers? 👀

EP482: Learning from By Rosie Jane’s Rosie Jane Johnston about her journey of building a 7-figure clean fragrance line.

Every legacy brand has an incredible why, and they have come back from a lot of struggles in the beginning. This is a clear pattern in the entrepreneurial world.

So when Rosie Jane reflects on being young and broke and asking to borrow $2000 from a friend for 20% of the company (!!!) (don’t worry btw - he said no ), it just goes to show the place many of us start at. There is no shame in starting with nothing. In fact, starting small is probably the greatest thing you can do.

You’re better off focusing your efforts on those all-important why’s. That’s where your courage and conviction lie.

“What am I doing this for? Why does this matter? Don’t just bring out a product for the hell of it. The one thing we’re actually missing is innovation.”

If you’re not doing something you truly believe in, something you truly love, you’re not going to stay the course. Whatever that why is for you, that will be your driving force. Your persistence and conviction. And now just let it take all the time it needs.

And if you love her episode, Rosie joined us for a recorded Ask Me Anything session in Majic last year and the session is available to all Majic members. Come hang out before we close our doors to founding members on January 31st.

The Biz Ride 🎢

Straight from Majic.

We’ve got an ongoing biz chat going in Majic. This is where we can learn what we can hopefully avoid in our own journeys, and what keeps us feeling like we are not alone in celebrating those highs.

This week, one of our community members was after some advice 🤔

“Hi everyone! Looking for advice: we started doing reviews and the feedback has been incredible, but we got one today that I would prefer not to post on our website, but I think I should so people are getting a full range... what do you all think?"

Another community member chimed in with a golden nugget we can all learn from ✨

"IMO it's all down to how many reviews you've got so far. The consumer is v intelligent and perceptive. We are able to read authenticity far better these days - brands that are transparent and genuinely doing well majorly stand out. With that in mind, I personally would post it. It’s almost like your BS detector comes on if something seems too perfect these days. If you are able to, respond to the review and show genuine and authentic customer service/go above and beyond."

*The doors to Majic are open, now’s the time to join our community of uplifting entrepreneurs building the future CPG companies! It doesn't need to be lonely and we're here to cheerlead you daily.
