🔑 Insights From This Week’s Episodes on the Female Startup Club Podcast
Directly from the women building the world’s most exciting businesses in the e-commerce and CPG space. This week, we’re learning from TikTok royalty. 👑
1. Mentality over strategy 🧠
EP301: Learning from Nadya Okamoto, the Founder of August, the lifestyle period brand that makes sustainable period care that actually works.
🤳 @nadyaokamoto - 178M Likes - 2.6M followers 🤳
Nadya was three years late to the TikTok game, and managed to gain these impressive stats in just 10(!!!) months. Instead of focusing on drafting out the perfect strategy, she fully immersed herself in the TikTok mentality. Play around on the platform. Spend as much time as possible on there. React to trends.
“We don’t plan ahead. The old ways of doing things, a content calendar. When you think about how to build content and trends it’s a lot more in the moment.”
Take it from the creator boasting 50+ videos a day. It sounds insane, but Okamoto learned to integrate it into every moment in her life, fully embracing the TikTok mentality. In the end it’s just a numbers game. 🤖
Her number one tip for those diving in? 👇
The biggest mistake you can make is to keep creating more of what isn’t doing well. If something is not performing it means it’s not engaging. You should change your strategy rather than waiting for people to engage.
2. Step-by-step starting guide ✍️
EP303: Today on the show we’re learning all things TikTok from the TikTok queen herself, Sandy Lin, founder of soon-to-launch tech biz Creobase.
🤳 @bysandylin - 3.3M Likes - 387.7K followers 🤳
Sandy shared the step-by-step starting guide to TikTok that grew her account to a following of 300K in just 6 months.
1. Start engaging 🪝
Get onto TikTok and start engaging with the type of content that you want to be known as. Search under relevant # and see the kind of creators that are under you, and start following them.
2. Do your homework 🤓
Study the content these accounts make, what makes the pop and what doesn’t. Interact with these accounts to teach the algorithm that these are the types of people you want to be following, who your target audience is.
3. Get comfy 🪑
Get comfortable seeing yourself and speaking to yourself on camera. Draft lots of content (it’s just for you to see, so who cares?). Do anything to get used to it.
4. Create “sh*t loads” 🚀
Check out the video banks of the people you follow to see what kind of content popped off for them. Mimic it in your own way and own style & showcase that.
Her number one tip for those diving in? 👇
If you have a video that starts gaining traction, keep doing that kind of video. Churn out different types of content, see what performs, double down, repeat.
Biz Wins & Failz 🎢
Straight from Hype Club.
We’ve got an ongoing Biz Wins & Fails chat going in HC. This is where we can learn what we can hopefully avoid in our own journeys, and what keeps us feeling like we are not in this alone in celebrating those highs.
Fiona Simmonds from PINKIE pads shared her win this week:
“We sell our period products to several schools and one school just placed a reorder 6 months earlier than we expected because the students love it so much they're hoarding the pads! It's our first repeat purchase!”
Yay to recurring revenue! Talk about validation 🎉
*The doors to Hype Club are open again, so if you’ve been looking forward to joining us - now’s the time!
