Who run the world?

GIRLS 👯

Hey! It’s Doone, your hype girl in business. This one goes out to every one of you who has contributed to the Swift-Barbie-Beyonce hype this summer and given a well-needed women-powered boost to the economy (whilst saving us all from falling into that looming “she-cession”). I see you!

Today we’re covering 👇

  • Go on now GO, get it out the door!

  • Your community blueprint from the world’s youngest, wealthiest BIPOC woman

  • News to know: Kulfi Beauty launches into Sephora

  • Resources & reccies: How to raise an angel round

  • Job hunting? Curie is hiring

Go on now GO, get it out the door! 🏃‍♀️

In the early days of building your business, chances are you’re working towards this one big sparkly thing: ✨launch day✨. Your product will go out into the world and everyone will rejoice. Your Shopify app won’t stop pinging!

I’m just going to go out there and say it. Your launch is going to be a huge anti-climax. It’s a bit like the anticipation of a huge New Year’s Eve party. But in the end, everyone got stuck in traffic or the fridge breaks so all the drinks are warm. We’ve all experienced THAT New Year Eve.

Instead of getting caught up in this idea, Babba chose to approach things a little differently (and I think we all have a lot to learn from that).

"In the age of social media, it's easy to forget it takes time to build a brand. Don’t overthink it and just get started somewhere, one foot in front of the other. The early wins were really to learn from our customers and our community. Don’t focus on a big launch, just get that feedback loop going and don't forget to have fun along the way."

Babba (Canales) Rivera

I know it doesn’t sound revolutionary: but just launch. Forget all the fanfare around it. Be the gal who's all about launching without waiting for the stars to align perfectly. Launch with a single SKU, get your brand out the door (sooner rather than later), acquire customers, learn from them, and get their feedback on what to do next. Just get things done, uncomfortably.

Becoming the world’s youngest, wealthiest BIPOC woman

Daniella started her first company, The Newsette, on her dorm-room floor. Despite not having any VC funding, seven years later The Newsette closed 2021 with $40M in sales and 8 figures of profit (& a valuation of over $200 million). She’s also the founder of the newly launched mental fitness startup Wondermind, co-founded alongside Selena Gomez & Mandy Teefey.

What do both of Daniella's success stories have in common? The brands are held up by a killer community. Stick around for Daniella’s community blueprint:

  • Persona 🌱 Daniella built two communities without ever being the face of the brand - instead, she built that persona from the ground up. Find something people are very passionate about, and hone in on that. Be what the people want.

  • Belonging 💕 If you have something that many people can get behind, that’s when you’ve built a community. It’s the comradery and sense that you’re in this club. Everyone belongs, you’re not alone, and you all share a belief system. Cultivating this sense of belonging will immediately feel like you know each other.

  • Patience  Girl, give yourself a break. There is no shortcut to true community. Don't beat yourself up because you’ve launched and it’s not the biggest thing a year later. The best things take a long time to nurture and grow, and it makes it a better community because you’ve really had the time to form those long-lasting bonds.

  • Bread raises multi-million funding round (led by Fearless Fund)

  • You’re about to find Kulfi Beauty in your local Sephora

  • BIG fashion news as Tapestry (Kate Spade & Coach) and Capri (Michael Kors & Versace) are combining in an $8.5 billion deal

  • Emily Man leaves Redpoint and joins Primary VC

  • Intimates brand Parade has been acquired by manufacturer Ariela & Associates International (they were valued @ $200M last August)

  • & CEO Cami Téllez revealed on Slack she’s been “pushed out”…

  • Working moms are making HOW much less than dads with degrees?

  • Just in: Amazon is imposing a fee on founders doing own shipping

  • TikTok News: NYC bans TikTok from city-owned devices & the platform now lets you shut off the algorithm with a toggle button

  • EventMobi acquires Run The World for an undisclosed amount

  • Big brands are seeing declining wholesale revenue

  • You make HOW much and feel poor?!
