Three 🔑 Insights From This Week’s Episodes on the Female Startup Club Podcast
Directly from the women building the world’s most exciting businesses in the e-commerce and CPG space
1. Kickin’ It Off 🚀
If you’re not familiar with Kickstarter, it is a funding platform for creative projects. Every project creator sets their project's funding goal and deadline, and if people like the project, they can pledge money to make it happen.
EP169: Earlier this week I spoke to Jing Gao about her 8-figure revenue business, the premium Chinese food company Fly by Ging.
Jing launched a wildly successful Kickstarter campaign (surpassing her $25k goal with $250k invested 🤯) to launch the core of her first products. She was ready to dish us all the know-hows of her self-professed “best way to launch a business”:
Kickstarter is a really effective way to tell stories: the product itself should be able to tell a story; that enables you to tell a ripple story behind it
Algorithms: they’ll show you to more people the more traffic you’re getting, hit your goal on the first day for it to snowball
Viral Product: the product should be inherently viral in its unique aspects
Mail List: you will gain access to the emails of all your supporters, use that to build that rapport, and begin building your community
Use Case: thousands of new Kickstarters are launched every day, filter to see which ones have done best and really study those cases
Press: a well-performing campaign will organically attract a lot of attention from food media and encourage press
2. Venture Capital Funding 💰
EP170: Ali Kriegsman is a force to be reckoned with. The Founder and CEO of Bulletin has raised almost $10M in funding and recently released an insightful book about her journey, called How to Build a Goddamn Empire.
It’s safe to say she knows a thing or two about successful pitching. During our chat this week, Ali opened up about her top three tips for any VC-minded entrepreneurs out there. These are worth noting down!
VC Funding Tips to Note 📝
Thorough Understanding 🤓
You need to be in a place as a founder, salesperson, pitch person, where you understand your business inside out.
If you have questions about your business, your customers, your segments, that’s going to be a problem
If you are bullshitting the person on the other side of the zoom or table, they are going to smell it
Tactical Tip: Ask people who know your industry better than you do, or just as well as you do, and ask if you can fake pitch them
Money Talks 🤑
You simply need revenue. We see this time and time again. It’s not cool, but…
“Women get measured by their proven track record, men get measured by their potential.”
Build on your defensibility by presenting data and information that is undeniable.
Dream Big 👀
You need a vision for how this company is going to be massive. At the end of the day, venture capitalists are interested in a massive return on their investment.
Ask Yourself: “How is this going to go public? How is this going to be a billion-dollar business? What is my exit strategy?”
3. Practicing Kindness Daily 👐
EP171: The thing that has made Milky Mama the multimillion-dollar revenue business that it is today? Kindness. When Krystal Duhaney made the switch from selling to teaching, the results were paramount.
“Being genuine. Coming from a place for trying to help people, instead of trying to sell to them all the time. Creating that warm and fuzzy feeling. That has really worked really well for us. We don’t spend money on influencers. Our customers are our influencers.”
Her story is such an incredible one that I know will resonate with a lot of you. In light of passing on this beacon of positivity, I encourage every one of you to actively practice kindness today. It doesn’t need to be monetary. Just a little something so people know that, hey… We’re all in this together :)
