🔑 Insights From This Week’s Episodes on the Female Startup Club Podcast
Directly from the women building the world’s most exciting businesses in the e-commerce and CPG space. This week, we’ll be pulling out key insights from our Fave FSC Hits of the last year. The best of the bunch. Pens at the ready!
1. How to get 50M+ views on TikTok 🤳
EP266: We’re learning from Fiona Chan, the founder behind a brand called Youthforia that’s built some crazy buzz in the beauty industry through TikTok.
Youthforia is seriously killing the TT game (check them out here). Currently boasting a modest 1.4M likes, we had to know the secret. Fiona’s strategy comes down to three overarching principles she was able to share with us:
Consistency ⌛
Create at least two TikTok videos a day if you’re going to take this seriously. You never know until you actually do it what will resonate with your audience - it’s a numbers game. But keep in mind: lean into what you’re able to commit to. If you’re going to create this much content, pick a content style that’s easy for you.
Relevance 🦚
Create a product that works well for the platform. Products that are visual, stand out, and get influencers on TikTok talking about your brand. It’s important to keep your pulse on the trends. It’s a very reactive platform and what will perform well is heavily dependent on on what’s going on that week.
Intimacy 💗
As a founder, be the face of the brand. Let your audience get to know you. Vids with storytelling of your background and why you created the product tend to perform very well. Use your individuality as your superpower.
2. Complacency kills ⚠️
EP268: I had a chat with Amanda Klane, half of the kindergarten-friends-turned-entrepreneur duo that founded Yasso - THE frozen greek yoghurt company you’ve probably spotted in your local grocery store.
The pair started the brand back in 2011, and have since built a biz that does hundreds of millions in annual revenue. Amanda’s No1 piece of advice for keeping the engine running all these years comes down to not getting complacent with your product and brand.
“We had to evolve the product, and with that the brand, in order to grow the brand.”
Don’t fall into the trap of getting too attached to what you created at the beginning and make sure to really evolve it over time.
“We’re still tweaking to make sure everything remains the best it can be. We learned that real quick. Get out there, talk to your customers, iterate.”
Improve your product, improve your brand, ensure your future.
3. Money makes money 💸
EP270: This episode I chatted with Elle Liu, the female founder behind Eucalypso. She creates ultra-sustainable bedding & managed to scale her business to 7-figures all whilst working a full-time job. Hats off.
Elle quickly discovered that she needed to spend some serious sums of money to ever be in with a chance of making money with the brand. It’s a multiplier.
“When you start putting out money, you start to see the return on that. It’s easy and simple when you think about it.”
If you’re thinking that this is a chicken and egg situation, it is. But you can work with that. Elle built her business to 7 figures all whilst working full time, to ensure that steady stream of capital into the brand. Anything is possible. 💫
FSC Mini-Series from the Founder ❤️
In this new mini-series within the FSC podcast, you’ll hear directly from me, your Host & Hype Girl about all the goings-on with the Female Startup Club. This week, I’ll be sharing the most valuable resources I came across this week.
5 Useful Resources ✍️
Goodbuy 🛍️You might remember I interviewed the founder, Cara Oppenheimer, on the show recently and I just can’t stop shouting about it ever since. It helps you shop with small online businesses based on your values using a chrome extension. It’s super cool and I’ve been using it a lot to discover new stores, absolutely love it and I know you will too!
Nik Sharma’s Newsletter 📰A super tactical industry-focused newsletter if you’re building a DTC brand. Every Sunday, Nik breaks down something to help you on the journey. Very cool stuff, very much worth a good read.
Latinapreneur ⚡️Andrea is a coach and producer that helps women find their voice on TikTok, and she’s great. She works with brands and creators, so if you’re needing some more guidance I’d recommend checking out her content.
Copywriter 💻Harry Dry is a superstar copywriter that put together this incredible (and free!) resource that gives you all the world’s best copy in one place.
Two Broke Chicks ❤️🔥I’m obsessed with Alex and Sally. They host a podcast and IG account all geared towards shopping deals and money hacks. It’s def more of a pleasure listen, but it’s well worth a binge.
Biz Wins & Failz 🎢
Here’s a cracker straight from Hype Club.
We’ve got an ongoing Biz Wins & Fails chat going in HC. This is where we can learn what we can hopefully avoid in our own journeys, and what keeps us feeling like we are not in this alone. A lot of us are seeing a lot of highlights, but tbh there are also so many downs and things that go wrong.
For Emily Pyke (Founder of Bare Thrills), there was a clear ✨WIN✨ this week:
“I have been nominated for YOUNG ENTREPRENEUR TO WATCH IN 2022 through Beam Magazine. Everything is slowly falling into place - So excited for what’s to come this year!”
Huge congrats to Emily, well deserved. 👏👏👏
