Your mentor in shining armor

I recently read an Oprah quote that said “a mentor is someone who allows you to see the hope inside yourself”, and it really resonated with me. As entrepreneurs, sometimes it can be scary to ask for help and reassurance even though it’s exactly what we need (and literally right now I have my hand up in the air because I am so guilty of this!). So often we just need a bit of extra perspective, a fresh set of eyes to see all those sparkly bits inside us that we’re so good at minimizing. That inner negative dialogue can become so loud and repetitive that we can actually start to believe it. Well, friends, I’m here to tell you that we’re here to stop that.

*Majic enters the chat* Hey Majic! Majic is coming into the world to make mentorship more accessible and achievable for everyone, to see the hope inside you, and I'm so excited for you to be able to dig in. 🔑 Insights From This Week’s Episodes on the Female Startup Club Podcast

Directly from the women building the world’s most exciting businesses in the e-commerce and CPG space.

1. Entrepreneurial etiquette, from the Queen of Chill 👑

FAVE HITS EP343: chatting to Cyndi Ramirez-Fulton about building the new-age spa and product-line everyone is talking about, Chillhouse.

I still think about this episode with Cyndi Ramirez-Fulton all. the. time. It was full of pearls of wisdom. We’ve rounded up our favorite pointers from the Queen of Chill, to help founders and to-be founders get in gear:

  • Never get so emotionally attached to something, when you do, failure hits you the hardest - go into things knowing that it might not necessarily pop off

  • Create experiences that you want for yourself - if you know you're creating something better for yourself, you've creating something better for others

  • Always look to the people right in front of you, and those with big audiences, to get right back on your feet - work with the people in your community and network and work with those that can amplify your product

  • Stop second-guessing yourself, the biggest differentiator between men and women? Men just do and women talk a lot, try to get feedback, and get advice. Men don’t ask questions, they just go for it - we want to see more women just having this innate reaction

Personally here at FSC, we got some serious kick-up-the-**** vibes from this chat. The ultimate takeaway is that if an idea feels brilliant to you, it could be brilliant to everybody. Stop mulling over the why not & get yourself in gear. You've got this.

2. 3-STEP-PLAN to having buyers slide into your DM's 💌

FAVE HITS EP348: learning from Everyday Humans founder Charlotte Chen Pienaar about bootstrapping a brand that does right by our planet.

Charlotte doesn’t pitch, she gets found on Instagram. Doesn’t that sounds like the dream? 💭 The founder shares her 3-step blueprint. ⬇️

1/ Inclusivity- providing equal access to opportunities and resources

"The branding should be inclusive. Ours has a uni-sex vibe to it."

Even your boyfriend or husband doesn’t mind using and buying it. On top of that, they champion a diverse customer range. Originally aimed at ages 25-35, they’ve found customers all the way down to 16 and up to 65. A lot can be said for finding a brand language that can be as inclusive as that.

2/ Diversity - the state of being diverse; variety

Everyday Humans champions itself as being a never-ordinary SPF brand. They’re against average SPF. No sun, no yellow branding. They really are different. On top of that, there aren't a lot of indie options for sunscreen. This is a winning formula! Stand-out brand + undisrupted category = 🤑🤑🤑. Differentiation matters. To buyers, to the competition, and to your success.

3/ Sustainability - the ability to be maintained at a certain rate or level

“Young people are super concerned about the environment, and about where they spend their money. Retailers really like that.”

Charlotte is a self-confessed sustainability nerd (check out this ep for some super cool insight into her LCA {lifecycle assessment} technique and more!) & Everday Humans is truly sustainable. It’s built into the DNA of their brand. You have to be really nitty gritty about your supply chain to make that sustainability real, but I really believe it’s worth every step.
