🔑 Insights From This Week’s Episodes on the Female Startup Club Podcast

Directly from the women building the world’s most exciting businesses in the e-commerce and CPG space.

1. Busting Myths 🧚

EP305: Learning from Hillary Peterson, the Founder of celebrity adored natural biocompatible skincare brand True Botanicals.

True Botanicals’ products are held to an extremely rigorous standard through independent clinical testing. And it was not cheap. Costs start at a mere $50K and it takes around 3 months. So why would you go through all that trouble?

“Today’s consumer needs that kind of authenticity and transparency to trust what a brand is saying. Everything is clean. Everything is organic.”

With clinical studies, you contract with independent labs to come up with statistically significant analyses of the products. With hers, Hillary essentially busted the myth that if something was clean it wouldn’t be as effective.

👉 It also becomes both an important customer data point and helps get the attention of thought leaders in the space (beauty editors, influencers, etc.) ✨

Fancy investing 50K yourself? *TIP* - you’ve really got to believe in your product.

2. Where content leads, success follows 📸

EP307: We’re chatting with Michelle Hu, the Founder of the beauty accessories brand making beauty more enjoyable, Etoile Collective.

Michelle’s number one piece of advice for entrepreneurs in any industry is to start creating content for the business well before you actually have the business. As soon as that 💡 goes off, get the 🎥 rolling.

“It’s free, it’s organic, and it’s the biggest thing that’s driven growth in the past few years.”

And you probably know where I’m going to go next… But TikTok will love you for it! One simple video from the early days of the biz recently picked up 3M views, increasing traffic to the Etoile Collective website by a whopping 8000%. 👀

FSC Mini-Series from the Founder ❤️

In this mini-series within the FSC podcast, you’ll hear directly from me, your Host & Hype Girl about all the goings-on with the Female Startup Club. This week, I’ll be breaking down the marketing launch plan of Your Hype Girl: what I learned, what I’ll do better next time, and what you can implement in your biz.

Your Hype Girl: The Launch Plan 🚀

Welcome my proven omnichannel strategy to-dos for creating a real buzz online.

1. SHOUT 📣 Creating content on your own channel is an absolute must and there’s no getting around that. Get in front of people as much as possible. People like people, not brands. Share your story, your how, and the why.

(TOGETHER) but you also want to get other creators talking about you. Create a list of creators you’d love to work with-, and reach out to find their rates, or if there are other cool ways you could work together within budget.

2. FEATURE 📰 Try to connect with journalists and get introductions wherever you can; I secured a piece of coverage with Refinery29 for launch week that added to my ‘social proof’. (You can read it here.)

3. TALK 🎙️ Knowing a thing or two about podcasts, this proved a great way for me to spread the word in the months leading up to the launch. Choose a realistic number of podcasts you want to feature in and stick to that goal.

4. MAIL 💌 We got some cool shoutouts in branded newsletters. People love to have things to feature & shout about, make sure your story lends to that.

5. CELEBRATE 💃🏻 It was these shoutouts that led Soho Works & Norby to support through hosting some cute parties in LDN & NYC. A gathering of any sort is a great chance to meet people IRL. Take your brand into the big world.

6. GIFT 🎁 And I found out I’m not the only one that loves gifts. Gifting 100 books to loyal listeners meant we had a great team to rally and hype the book.

7. RALLY ✊ It’s that rally that really brought it all together. This is the time to cash is those favors. Friends, crew, listeners, ambassadors… For everyone to shout loudly on social media and within their network, let’s get it out there.

All of this might come across as overwhelming, but I promise it’s not. I whacked everything into a spreadsheet and made sure to cover the steps day by day. If this is at all useful, please do share and help spread the good word! 🤗 💗

Biz Wins & Failz 🎢

Straight from Hype Club.

We’ve got an ongoing Biz Wins & Fails chat going in HC. This is where we can learn what we can hopefully avoid in our own journeys, and what keeps us feeling like we are not in this alone in celebrating those highs.

Becca Mapes (Founder of Winden) had a failure to share with us this week about resizing the shape of their solid shampoo bars:

“We've been patiently waiting and finally received the new samples yesterday and they're WAY too big for our containers 😱. The actual formula has been ready for production for about six months!”

One of those annoying things that are part of the journey - a good reminder that if it was easy everyone would do it! For now, time for some self-care. ☁️

*The doors to Hype Club are open again, so if you’ve been looking forward to joining us - now’s the time!
