BEWARE of this bias 🚫; how to say NO as someone who loves to say yes 🙋‍♀️

Hi! It's your BFF in biz dropping into your inbox with your weekly source of inspiration & information on all things around women in business rn.

Hey! It’s Doone, your hype girl in business. This one goes out to all of us who know we should be on TikTok, WANT to get on TikTok... but don't know where to start.

Last week I was OVERWHELMED with just how many people hit reply to our email wanting to learn more about TikTok. So I've taken things one step further and put together the ultimate 7 Day Challenge to building your TikTok habit. I'm sharing all the lessons I've learned from my recent viral content series + the women on the show who are crushing it.

Basically you sign up today, and starting from next Monday (29th May) you'll receive an email every day for 7 days straight with a power-prompt to help you find your style and build the TikTok habit.

👉 Access it here for $89 (if you're working the 9-5 your boss might even be kind enough to let you expense it ;))

Once you've bought it hit reply to this email and let me know what you do so I can make sure it's tailored to the right crowd... I read every email I get (even if I'm not able to reply to every single one).

Now let’s get into it 👇

BEWARE of this bias 🚫

Welcome to our mini-series: where Pleasant State's co-founder Ami Bateman takes us on the journey of her Equity Crowdfunding Campaign (as it's happening in real-time). I'll take you through Ami’s journey in starting the clean cleaning brand right through to their just launched equity crowdfunding campaign so you get a front-row seat into the hows, the whats, the oops-moments and the ✨wins✨. (& you're encouraged to get involved yourself: check out how to become a shareholder)

In this first episode, we touched upon something that totally blew my mind & should be spoken about much more often. So let me introduce you to the concept of escalating commitment bias. It's a fancy way of saying that we tend to use the time, money & investment we've put into something as a way of predicting the future.

Take my non-alc wine journey for example. Some of you might remember, that in 2021 I spent a lot of all of the above (time, money & investment) into launching a non-alc wine brand into the market, before realizing that the numbers didn't make sense and we had to drop the whole thing. It seriously sucked. Often in that early phase, you're so passionate and you're not prepared to walk away (🙋‍♀️); but if something isn't a viable business (for you and where you are in the journey) this is what you have to do. Don't let the hard work you've put in so far blind-side you into a future that doesn't make business-sense.

Ami wants you to always treat it as day 0. Ask yourself these three questions:

  1. From here on, are we going to make it or not?

  2. What is it going to take?

  3. What is the next path forward?

Everything that has led you up to this moment is essentially (and at times heartbreakingly) void. Give a big thank you to your hard work for getting you to where you are right now, but under no circumstances let it influence your steps moving forward.

How to say NO as someone who loves to say yes 🙋‍♀️

It was Women's Health Week last week and it got me thinking about the importance of boundaries, in a time where we're expected to be switched on and available 24/7. Boundaries often start with a frightening word that sounds a little like 'no', and can be suprisingly hard to say out loud. A request to ‘pick our brain', hopping on a ‘quick call’, a new project we don’t have the time for… & then the million excuses that pop into our head for how we might be able to maneuver our way out of this one.

But here’s the thing: you don’t owe anybody a reason to protect your time - a no is a reason enough in itself.

You reach a certain point in your career when you know exactly what is going to fill your cup, or what doesn’t make sense for you right now. Saying no in those moments not only ✨protects your peace✨ but also gives a nod to someone that it’s okay for them to say no too from time to time.

So join me, and let’s practice our no’s this week ✊
