Then, in 2018, she got an unexpected order. Serena Williams—yes, the Serena Williams—placed an order through Nude Barre's website. Erin couldn’t believe her eyeballs. This wasn’t just an exciting moment; this had huge opportunity potential.

When Serena reached out to ask about restocking her fave items (since they’d sold out just before one of her tennis matches), Erin had a transparent conversation with her about the challenges of bootstrapping and how she had to be extra intentional with restocking decisions due to limited capital. And then…she decided to shoot her shot.

💡 Lesson #1: Don’t Be Afraid to Ask: even though it felt like a wild dream, Erin asked Serena a simple question: would she be interested in investing?

The audacity of the question opened a door. While Serena didn’t jump right in, her team suggested that Erin apply to a pitch competition Serena was hosting with Whitney Wolfe Herd. Thousands of founders applied, she went through round after round until she reached the final three and eventually won the (undisclosed) investment.

💡 Lesson #2: Overnight Success Doesn’t Exist: In the words of Erin herself, people often look at her journey and think, “Wow, overnight success!” But the reality? She’s been grinding since 2009. Getting to the point where Nude Barre has celebrity partners and that well-known status took years of persistence, grit, and plenty of “shooting her shot” moments.
