Two 🔑 Insights From This Week’s Episodes on the Female Startup Club Podcast
Directly from the women building the world’s most exciting businesses in the e-commerce and CPG space.
1. Amazon = A Search Engine 🔍
Did you know 45% of all searches begin on Amazon? It’s a search engine on its own. This was a hot topic amongst our guests in the food & beverage industry this week.
EP175: For Margaret from Three Wishes Cereal, discovery meant that Amazon was always an important channel to focus on. This became increasingly interesting with the pandemic, and consumer behavior shifting to shopping for daily supplies through the e-commerce giant.
I asked Margaret to dig a little deeper into how it might practically look to “build your brand out on Amazon”, and she gave us some handy tips to getting yourself established in the busy market space.
Amazon PPC Campaigns: sponsored pay-per-click advertising created and managed by the brand owner
Ads on any other Amazon properties that lead back to Amazon
Re-directing Google: catching your google searches and directing the consumer to your Amazon platform to simplify the purchasing process
“We tested a ton of different things to see which networks and netcaptors worked. You’ve got to play around with a lot of things.”
EP177: Christina Ros Blankfein from beverage start-up Swoon is a little more hesitant when it comes to re-directing their DTC traffic to Amazon.
“We have thought a lot about the role of Amazon for a CPG brand, and the point of being on our own site vs. being on Amazon.”
Swoon really values the communication and connection that comes with serving their customers through their own website. Testing the messages and imagery, creating high value, full control over conversion rates…
However, Amazon remains so key as a convenience. It is a place that you just need to be in today’s world. For Swoon both the discovery aspect, and the learnings derived from consumer reviews mean that Amazon will always operate alongside their DTC channels.
The main learning here? Amazon does not need to trump DTC but ensure your brand is ready to meet your potential customers with open arms on Amazon 🤗
2. First Hires & Social Media: The Crucial Connection 💬
EP176: In my chat with Taran Ghatrora (Founder of body-care brand Blume) this week, I asked her about the first official hire the company made. I thought it would give a cool insight into the priorities and realities of the entrepreneurial journey. For Taran, it was clear: they needed someone to help with social media.
“It’s so key. So important. Our community really interacts with us there. It took so much off my plate and gave the community the attention they deserved.”
For all the obvious reasons, social media has become such an essential piece of your business’ marketing strategy. It helps you connect, increase awareness, boost sales… But there’s no getting around the fact that it takes time, consistency, and commitment to build that fruitful online community!
In the words of our previous guest Gwen Lane (7-fig entrepreneur and social media expert):
“If you’re not shooting content consistently, not thinking of ideas consistently, and you're not planning consistently, it’s going to be really hard.”
The solution: get someone on board to manage your social media channels; allow yourself more time to focus on other initiatives 🚀
