🔑 Insights From This Week’s Episodes on the Female Startup Club Podcast

Directly from the women building the world’s most exciting businesses in the e-commerce and CPG space.

1. Chose your words wisely 🦉

EP244: Talking to the woman who sued the New York Subway to make a stand for pleasure at the forefront of wellness, Dame’s Alexandra Fine.

“You have a great product, say something powerful.”

All too often, people underestimate the power of words in bringing their product out into the world. In your marketing, you can really have a conversation that prickles people’s ears. Gets people interested in wanting to have a conversation back with you. Market with emotion.

A knock-on advantage to this, you’re going to get press’ attention. Be outlandish. If you get the press’ attention, that’s earned media. It’s powerful.

Earned media = coverage of your brand through organic means.

2. Selling 100,000 units in your first year 🚀

EP245: Learning from Dee Charlemagne, the co-founder of AVEC Drinks.

“We didn’t know how powerful PR could be to drive your whole business in the first year, but we knew we needed to tell a story.”

🐝 Tell a story around how to use your product, why, why to care, and create some excitement and buzz around it.

Leverage anything that differentiates you from the others. AVEC has a diverse team, strong values, and had to launch on the internet due to COVID.

👉 Most launch dollars were spent on a really cool website, making sure the experience felt cool and then really working on the branding and the product.

Get in front of real people and do cool things. It’s fun!”

Dee believes keeping your story at the core, is THE way to drive PR and earned media moving forward. Their NY Times launch-day feature speaks for itself. 😏

3. Fail fast - fix fast - learn fast 🤓

EP246: We’re learning from Madeline Fraser, the founder behind a brand called Gemist, about her learnings as a female founder of this brand and her previous two business ventures.

Madeline shared a great little mantra on how to deal with failure.

“Fail fast, fix fast, learn fast.”

You’re building something out of nothing, you’re guessing along the way a lot of the time. If you have that failure, learn from it, and quickly try to fix it, then it could actually equal success.

  • Failure + Learning = Success ⭐

This allowed the Gemist team to not really be afraid of failing but to just move swiftly ahead. Face failure head on - manifest that version of success.

Biz Wins & Failz 🎢

Here’s a cracker straight from Hype Club.

We’ve got an ongoing Biz Wins & Fails chat going in HC. This is where we can learn what we can hopefully avoid in our own journeys, and what keeps us feeling like we are not in this alone. A lot of us are seeing a lot of highlights, but tbh there are also so many downs and things that go wrong.

Liza Belmonte shared her “beginner mistake” with us this week:

“Well three weeks ago, I thought it would be a good idea to order 56 meters of fabric before seeing how it looked on a sample. You have to wait 11 weeks for fabric in Fashion and I thought I was taking such a clever and risk-free shortcut. Well the sample got made and when I first saw it (too late) it was horrendous.”

The learning? Shortcuts are EXPENSIVE. Do not take them.
